The best word to describe Twin City Elementary School is "traditional". At the early grades, we stay focused on the basics, Reading and Math. It is our belief that if a strong foundation is not laid in these areas in Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade, then it will be extremely difficult for a child to be successful in his/her future academic career. Academic problems and concerns are addressed in these early years in hopes of correcting them before the student reaches the Third Grade.
In grades K-2, our classes are self-contained. Our Kindergarten classes are the only classes that have a full-time paraprofessional.
Upon reaching the Third Grade, the curriculum expands beyond the basics of Reading and Math to include Science, Social Studies, etc. Students in the Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade change classes and have the opportunity to have each of the four teachers at their respective grade levels.
While being described as "traditional," we are also innovative in our approach of preparing students to be productive, contributing members of their communities in the 21st Century. Exploratory courses in the areas of PE, Music & Drama and Technology Education help students receive a diversified and well-rounded curriculum. Each of Twin City Elementary's classrooms has Internet access, as well as having access to an Instructional Network which supports and compliments the instructional curriculum being taught throughout the building. In addition to the computers available in each classroom, TCE has a Technology Education classroom containing 25 computers and an additional computer lab of 25 computers housed within the conference room of the school's Media Center. TCE is also adding Accelerated Reader to its instructional repertoire during the upcoming 2000-2001 school year to help instill within each of our students a life-long love of reading.
Twin City Elementary School has a full-time Vista Volunteer on staff who coordinates our parent and community volunteers who come weekly to assist students on a one-on-one basis. This individual also works closely with a well-established After-School Tutorial program that pairs local middle school and high school students with elementary-age students who are experiencing academic problems or who need a little extra assistance and encouragement to be successful.
