SART IN ACTION!

Georgia Southern's Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is involved with the following activities:

SAPA

Sexual Assault Prevention Advocates is a student organization at Georgia Southern University whose mission is to promote discussion among peers regarding the issues of sexual violence.

The main goal of these discussions is to increase awareness and sensitivity regading sexual assault, improve communication between women and men around sexual issues, to educate students about sexual assault risk factors, and to reduce the incidence of sexual violence.

SAPA fulfills its mission by providing a Women's Program: Men's Program Mixed-Gender Program to students and the Georgia Southern University Community.

SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH

For one month during March or April of each year, SART sponsors the following events...

  • Clothesline Project. See www.ClotheslineProject.org
  • Clothesline Pin Sale. As part of the effort to both to maintain awareness of the importance of Sexual Assault Education and to raise funds for our continued work, SART sells commemorative Clothesline Pins throughout the year. These pins are made of either a composite material ($5.00) in a variety of colors, or sterling silver ($10.00). The pins are designed and produced by Bonnie Shelley, of California, a founder of the National Clothesline Project. If you are interested in purchasing a pin, you can contact Dr. Jodi Caldwell at 912.478.5541.
  • Take Back the Night. Georgia Southern is proud to participate in the International Take Back the Night initiative. Originally begun in England as a protest against the feat that women encountered walking on the streets at night, the initiative came to the United States in 1978. Take Back the Night is now an international rally and vigil held in local communities with the purpose of unifying women, men, and children in an awareness of violence against women, children and families. The Take Back the Night march and rally is the culminating event for Georgia Southern's annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
  • Annual Candlelight Vigil. This event wraps up the yearly awareness month. Participants light candles in remembrance of those who have been killed as a result of sexual violence.
  • Brett Sokolow, J.D., President of the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management
    • Drunk Sex or Date Rape: Can You Tell the Difference? This chilling program teaches students about incapacity and blackouts, and dispels common myths about alcohol and sex. The audience is presented with the facts of an actual court case. The audience is then given the opportunity to rule as to whether or not a sexual assault has been committed. The real life outcome is revealed and legal points are explained by an expert in the field of sexual assault adjudication.
    • Adjudicating Sexaul Assault Cases Legal and law enforcement personnel are invited to this special workshop.

SEX SIGNALS!

Sex Signals

SART works to bring this nationally acclaimed educational performance to campus each year. While our target audience is the freshman class, all students are welcome to attend. In 2005, SEX SIGNALS! performed 5 times between August 30th and 31st.

Over 2,000 Georgia Southern students attended. Using a combination of improvisational comedy, education, and audience participation, SEX SIGNALS provided a provocative look at the issues of dating, sex, and ultimately, date rape on college campuses.

See the SEX SIGNALS web site for more information about this program. See photos of the performance.

Georgia Southern students now have five SANE nurses available at the Health Services Center. This will enable students who have been victimized to bypass the local Emergency Room and have evidence collected, statements taken, and medical attention received in the more familiar and affordable setting of the Georgia Southern campus.

Currently, SANE is available on campus during operating hours of 8am - 5pm. Students needing SANE services outside of business house should contact the University Police Department at 912.478.5234 and request contact with the on-call SANE provider.

LOBBYING EFFORTS

In 2006 SART created the Georgia College SART list-serve, which was subsumed by the Georgia Network to End Sexual Assault (GNESA) in 2007. This list-serve was developed to allow Sexual Assault Addvocates throughout the state to begin to dialogue about needed legislative reforms.

In 2008 SART representatives joined advocates at the State Capital in Atlanta, Georgia for "A Day to End Violence Against Women." This large scale lobbying effort highlighted for legislators some of the problematic issues with Georgia's current legal codes.

SART returned to Atlanta for the 2009 Day to End Sexual Violence, bringing along 9 SAPA students who were selected from among all Georgia state university students to perform at the event's press conference!

RAPE AGGRESSION DEFENSE (R.A.D.) TRAINING

SART is a strong supporter of the Rape Aggression Defense System, or R.A.D., which is a national program that teaches realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. At GSU, the R.A.D. program is sponsored by Public Safety. More information can be found at http://welcome.georgiasouthern.edu/publicsafety/rad.htm.

CONSULTATION

SART has worked with professionals at other universities to assist in the development and implementation of their own SARTs. Universities mentored include Armstrong Atlantic University and Savannah State University.

POSTER CAMPAIGN

SART purchases and distributes a wide variety of awareness raising posters which are placed throughout the university community. In addition, through the support of local proprietors, we are able to place posters in many of the bars, restaurants, and establishments frequented by our students. Examples of these posters can be found at www.MenCanStopRape.org and www.911rape.org/request. See our Thank You page for participating businesses.

COLLABORATION WITH AMETHYST INTERNATIONAL

In 2006, SART co-sponsored the Walk for Living, an event of "Statesboro Cares," which is a week of activities aimed at enhancing awareness about HIV-AIDS in the Georgia Southern and Statesboro communities.
