What To Do If You Have Been Sexually Assaulted

1. Call:

  • the University Police at 912.478.5234, or
  • 911, or
  • the Statesboro Police Department at 912.764.9911, or
  • the Bulloch County Sheriff at 912.764.8888

2. Call the Counseling Center, 24 hours a day, 912-478-5541.

3. Call a Close Friend.

4. Seek medical attention immediately. Call the GSU Health Center at 912.478.5641 between 8 AM and 5 PM weekdays, the Statesboro Regional Sexual Assault Center at 912.489.6060, or go to the East Georgia Regional Medical Center Emergency Room on Fair Road.

DO NOT bathe, shower, douche, or change clothes until you have talked with the police.

Your Rights as a Victim of Sexual Assault in the Judicial Process

  • You have the right to file a complaint with the Office of Judicial Affairs (912.478.5409).
  • To choose whether to charge the accused student with a violation of the law. The victim may also charge the student with a violatin of the student conduct code, resulting in a formal hearing before the University Judicial Board or a University Haring Officer. At the discretinof the victim and with the consent of the accused student, the case may be resolved through a formal mediation process administered through the Office of Judicial Affairs.
  • To have a person of your choice accompany you throughout the judicial process.
  • To submit a Victim Impact Statement prior to any penalty being imposed.
  • To have past unrelated behavior excluded from the hearing.
  • To be informed of the outcome of the disciplinary hearing.
  • In appropriate cases, to have adjustments made in academic programs and campus living arrangements.

Common Responses to Recent Sexual Assault

  • You may feel ashamed, guilty, fearful or numb. Your sense of self worth may be diminished after an assault. It is important to remember that the attack is not your fault.

  • You may find it difficult to trust and to be intimate with others.

  • You may experience flashbacks of the incident.

  • You may experience fear of being alone.

  • You may experience nightmares or other sleep disturbances.

  • You may not be able to concentrate and focus. This can affect academic or job performance.
